Desrtxplorer was founded by Stephan Zumsteg, a Swiss national, life-long explorer, international white-water river guide and long-term resident of Peru. He came first to South America in 1989 to explore the whitewater tributaries of the Amazon in a kayak. He was an expedition leader on many rivers in the world including the Grand Canyon, the Zambezi, the Bio Bio--all of the top white water rivers in the world.
Stefan co-founded Amazonas Explorer, a highly renowned adventure travel company based in Cusco, Peru. He also was Expedition leader on various television programs with the BBC, NatGeo and Redbull TV where he led expeditions featured in https://www.redbull.com/int-en/episodes/dare-to-soar-flying-with-condors-explorers-adventures-of-the-century-s04-e05.
Stephan started exploring remote areas of Peru and other South American countries, together with Luzmaria Lores, by off-roading 10 years ago. He has intimate knowledge, for example, of the Ica/Nazca deserts in Southern Peru, which have the largest sand dunes in the world. His long-term familiarity with South America’s rivers and landscapes means that he knows all the the choicest routes in Peru and Bolivia like the back of his hand.

The key to Desert Explorer’s Safety Policy is our highly trained and superbly motivated staff. Our guides make decisions that put safety above all else. These decisions include taking an easier route by avoiding more difficult dunes or very steep accents or descends. We expect our clients to abide by these decisions since safety must always be paramount.
